PVV and Sustainability — Why not Organic?
-
Organic processes are the foundation of sustainable agriculture
- Use of low-impact, "natural" inputs
-
However, organic farming only covers inputs (fertilizers, pesticides)
- Does not address management practices outside the field
- Also, not all organic processes are necessarily sustainable
- Use of copper as a fungicide, effective, but toxic at high levels
- Need to look at the entire operation
- Vine management-pesticides, fertilizer, canopy management
- Turf management-use of cover crops, plant biodiversity
- Buffer zones-unplanted "wild" zones
- Fuel management-biodiesel
- Employees-skilled workers
- Financials-have to be able to keep going
